Fearing Women

In the Weeks Ahead

In this age of the empowerment of women it is distressing to see the limited focus related to the issues. It should be clear that this author is clearly in support of the women’s movement. but I’m feeling the need to do more in depth exploration of matters that need to be dealt with as women become empowered.

The Threat of Women

It is impossible to look at the women’s movement without seeing the fact that it is feared. Or at least that is my perspective. Why should we fight against equality given the benefits that are offered for all of us? Once that question is asked something becomes perfectly clear. People fight the equality of other people all the time. We have class warfare, country warfare, deep prejudice against people of color and on and on. Why not against women?

In Fact

Something fundamental has changed. Among other things, women have gained control over their reproductive capacity. Or at least they are making significant gains although there is opposition there as well. Many of us are now having fewer children in a complex and changing world. These and other changes are opening doors to women having greater autonomy and possibilities.

Not So Simple

As we begin to explore the issues, the import and complexity becomes apparent. To some the complexity is reason enough to be opposed to the movement. But, in fact, in this rapidly changing world we must examine the detailing of any such changes.  The essential nature of it is apparent and the possibility of benefits are huge. But we need to understand the impact of change and what will be demanded of us.

An Essential Question

To some of us it is apparent that women being empowered is something that is frightening to many men. Whether they want to hear it or not, it is clear that, yes, many men are afraid of empowered women. When the subject is opened, it is clear that it is not a simple matter and we are just beginning to explore what is happening and what it may mean. And when we say what it may mean we find it may mean many different things to many people. It is time to begin to explore because the consequences are rather impressive.

Why Fear?

Yes, why the fear is an essential question. First of all it will be difficult to help many men admit they are afraid. When they admit fear it may mean to them that they are admitting weakness. As soon as this component is opened other questions come cascading out along with many alternatives.

Then There is Partnership

In fact we are not just looking at empowerment or a yielding of power. We can, in fact, join together in a new glorious day. Suddenly we open further contributions and alternatives for all of us.

The issues are complex and unexpected. Recently a study was revealed that said teens who don’t date may be less depressed. Oooops. It actually may have been unsuspected but not surprising upon examination. Beginning dating is difficult, emotionally risky and is a major learning experience.

The Bottom Line

We have substantive explorations to undertake. We may be frightened and have to deal with the unexpected but we do not have to go too deeply to see the benefits of empowerment and the acceptance of it by men can be hugely rewarding. Not the least of the benefits may be truly complex partnership. There is so much more to come and since I am among those who seek the “what if” endlessly this is a new and glorious day.

Gaia’s Majesty-Challenge

A New Day? At Last?

Women in My Writing

In my writing it is clear that I like women and a central theme in my Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy is the import of empowered women.

Throughout human history women have an interesting history. There are those we love and those whom we fear. But in general women have been given a secondary place. Men rule, fight and triumph. Only do we occasionally see women who are our partners in our most violent struggles such as I have noted in the Warrior Women in the history in the Steppes of Central Asia and in the Viking struggles. These examples show us that women can join with men in different forms of struggles and partnerships. These roles are often overlooked but hint of a great richness in who we are with each other.

Now Comes a New Age

Looking back at history we see that the earliest humans are generally viewed as having the men who went out to hunt and do battle and the women remained behind to gather the fruits and to bear and raise the children. Given the nature of our earliest lives on this planet that is a realistic enough form of what we did.

But now we can experience new options. Since this new world is right out there before us we can easily observe new possibilities. Granted, women will still bear the children because there is no other option. But with richer resources they now have much more opportunities to join men in many activities. And they come with other viewpoints and orientations that enrich all of us. And so we see the opening of new types of partnership. Which is leading us into another form of struggle.

Men are not yielding their dominance and power easily and there is a certain justification to the struggle because we have much to learn and struggle will instruct us.

The Coming of Empowerment

One of the things that delight me is that I have lived in a time when the coming empowerment of women has really taken hold. The struggle has taken a long time but we see it fully taking shape. At this point we can only begin to put together the meaning and benefits. It is still far from our clear sight. But it is clear the partnerships that will grow will be diverse, important and bear glorious fruit for our future existence.

And then in my imagination I perceive the possibility of transformational possibilities. As I look around, I see women as being closer to spiritual possibilities. The difference I believe is related to our physiology and our emotional makeup. We are not universally different but there is a range and it seems to me overall that women are closer to a spiritual world. That is why in my writing I have selected women to lead us into the opening of a new set of possibilities with the universe.

We have reached a period of renewed and dangerous struggle in human affairs and it comes just at the point where the empowerment of women is reaching a new level of strength and impact. It is possible that the timing of this empowerment may lead to a new or productive and creative era. We have a lot ahead of us but it is this element that makes me most hopeful.

I’m tired of the domination of older white men and older power hungry men in general. I see their domination has led us only into endless wars and the loss of so much potential. With what is happening now there is the possibility of ending this domination and the waste of human potential. This may be a new age and comes with all the promise of new substantive partnerships with women.

Calling On Men

Posing an Opportunity

The focus has been on the movement to empower women. But there is something we’ve been missing. It might be very useful to turn toward men and ask them what they want. I’m definitely not talking about older white men because we know generally what they want. Of course there are surely some who are enlightened but we know the public wasteland which has been enduring. So, we turn to young men who are living through a new and difficult age. We might find that people have not been asking them and they would have some thoughts.

What Might We Hear?

I do understand that when you start asking questions you may be surprised by the answers and the range of answers. But, in general, my sense is that there has been far too much silence out there in man land.

The atmosphere in America of late has been stunningly uninspiring. What if we offer men the opportunity to seek a vision and open a world to them at the very moment that there is an opening for women?

An Opportunity

I’m going to refer now to the American Wasteland. What I have seen recently is a wasteland lacking in vision. Or at least that is what has been dominant and now we are in the moment when we are at great risk. Perhaps this is the moment to ask moving questions. And the word wasteland should focus attention.

As I look back over my life I see a rather rigid set of expectations for men but that has been changing. We have taken down the crucifix of rigid sexual and marital expectations. We have a growing LGBTQ community and are calling out for racial and ethnic acceptance and are experiencing a backlash especially visible in the white power movement. This may well be the moment when we need to turn to men and ask them what they might want. And how they may contribute in our hour of need.

I say “might want” because for many men they may feel they have never been asked. The pressure has been on following the established path. Why not? It has always led them to dominance. We might just raise the possibility of sharing a much magnified and diverse set of partnerships and options.

Just a Thought

But again I come back to the fact that we have a movement to empower women and we might ask men if they want a movement as well. But one thing needs to be clear. When we are talking about empowerment, we are not talking about dominance and taking on domination. We use empowerment in terms of women because too often they have been forced into relatively powerless positions.

Empowerment can come in many forms and one of them can be to enhance partnership. It would be useful for us to broaden our thinking.

The Facts

In fact power has been in only a few hands. Of course that generally is how it works because w leadership and organizations are needed but currently there are too many aberrations and corruption. It is time to rethink. The impulse of some is to say they are fed up and to just close up and turn away. What is needed is increased attention and commitment. This crisis may be a huge opportunity if we will make it so and as part of it I would love to hear what men say if they are offered a new form of empowerment and partnership.

Gaia’s Majesty-Challenge

The Not So Loyal Opposition

For you, what are the implications of the movement to empower women?

Opposing Empowerment

From history it is clear that there are very many people opposed to women being empowered. It was not so long ago that women did not have the right to vote. They had to be brave, march in the streets and insist that they should have such a right. In the 1960s came the women’s liberation movement.  In some ways it was not an easy time for women. I recall women dressing in what amounted to men’s suits with ties. That form of dress was (thankfully) abandoned shortly. But we were all finding our way.

There were questions about who would support women being liberated and that included some women.  At times it was all so tentative. I recall being at a convention and hearing there was to be a meeting of women about the issues. I showed up wanting to hear what they had to say and a stricken woman politely told me it was for women only. In retrospect I can see how they wanted to consider where they stood and what needed to be done without some male making possibly unwanted input, possibly in the form of “mansplaining”.

Male Subterfuges

And lets face it, whether men will say so out loud, many of them are opposed to women being empowered. And, of course, the question is why they should feel so threatened. Of course, they almost never put it that way. There were simple statements that a woman’s place was in the home, that it was unseemly what women were asking and on and on.  Oh please, can we be honest?

Actually, I’m not so sure we can be honest because I think the issues are so fundamental and deep in the human psyche that I’m not sure we can easily be honest.

Such Breadth of Opposition!

And then there are other matters which are related. Recently it has come out that men in football are suffering terrible brain injuries from the brain bouncing around in the skull and from twisting of the brain stem. Suggesting there is a problem seems to be tantamount to taking away their masculinity. But the real point here is something else that came up in one discussion I heard. A couple of former players raised the issue of a player who came out and said he was gay. To put it mildly he was not treated well by his brother players. And then both of the former players commented that they thought the homophobia was simply another form of being antiwomen. I simply can’t respond to that thought in a simple fashion.

Expecting a Backlash

The bottom line here is that there is a lot more than meets the eye. Presently we have a war on women going on in the United States. Efforts are being made to restrict women’s reproductive rights which also relates to fundamental issues of health care. The talk is about opposition to abortion but, not for a second do I believe that is the issue. Women are not supposed to be empowered.

And I fully expect that I’m going to get some nastiness for supporting the movement and I think it will be disguised and, in fact, the men objecting may actually believe what they are saying. This is a very, very deep issue which will require exploration. And this issue is fundamentally underlying my Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy.

I’ll have much more to say and some thoughts about the underlying issues.

How are you expecting the movement for empowerment will play out?

Gaia’s Majesty-Challenge

The Overlords in the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy

Universal Struggle

Struggle is universal among the animals of Earth. Competition presses their development. And we see that competition in the interactions of  protagonists and antagonists. In the Gaia’s Majesty series the antagonists are called Overlords. But with them the essential struggle is against their greed and domination.

People are predators who had their origins in the sea. The Tethyans were some of those who developed in the sea but were charged to contain their predation. There were other predators who emerged and they remained thoroughly committed to greed and power. Those are the Overlords. Given the mission of the Tethyans for stewardship, the conflict between these two groups was inevitable.

Not An Invention

In fact these antagonists are not strangers to us. There are many forms of rule and that rule may be benevolent or oppressive. Looking back at European history we see a ruling class which was composed of intertwined royal families. Some were more benevolent than others. Royalty finally bowed to a new form of government, but the existence of powerful intertwined groups did not disappear.

In some way it is appropriate to say that royalty has been replaced by the oligarchy. In each country we see wealthy families dominating business and they have great governmental influence. In Russia the oligarchs have been fleecing the people. Their grasp on power is deep. In America we are clear wealth heavily influences our government. Oligarchs are among us as well.

Benefitting the Many

The Overlords in this trilogy are a devise. They were not meant to be a truly substantive part of the work. Certainly they have a role, but in the end they yield to a more fundamental theme. As with royalty, times change and different kinds of influence come into being.

A core theme in these works relates to the end of the subjugation of women and their empowerment. And as that occurs there is broader benefit and prosperity. And even better, there is the reality of them forming strong partnerships with men.

In the end wouldn’t it be wonderful if we replaced the rule of the oligarch with the benevolence of women and men in partnership? Of course it’s a dream, but the power of the empowerment movement and its benefits are already flowering. So it may not be just a dream.

What do you think of this dream?

Gaia’s Majesty-Challenge

Fiction Writing and Transformation

Making a Beginning

When I started to write my Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy I merely thought I had an intriguing idea. I had always loved having my imagination stirred by mythology and mermaids particularly took my attention. There were mermen but no one seemed to care much about them. And so in this era of the empowerment of women I moved forward to a fantasy in a current real world setting. I believe the best term for the series is magical realism.

The Opening

The first book opens with a focus on an innocent young woman by the name of Avery. She worked serving third world women in an effort to give them an independent and productive economic future. Certainly she was dedicated but had no idea what was going to unfold in her life.

Not long after she had entered college the people she thought were her parents were killed in an automobile accident. She felt abandoned and moved forward.

Now Here Is the Writing Part

As a psychologist I knew the trauma she felt and that there would be great difficulty as she moved forward dedicated but alone. As it turned out she was not alone. She came to know her real parents were alive and she was a key person in the time our Earth Mother would throw the world into crisis. Her emotional agony was terrible.

I knew there had been  inner turmoil and I showed it in the story but initially it came across as whining. No doubt that was what she felt inside but that was not intriguing in the book. I had to tone her emotions down.

Each Character Had a Birth and A Development

I began this effort with a detailed outline and a plan. The plan was useful but the characters were troublesome. I took Avery in hand and brought in some other women. First came an especially intriguing women called Brigid. She was the leader of the Andromeda warrior women and had Irish heritage. Well, kind of.

I was led into some research on Brigid who had flaming red hair and decided she was Irish but it seemed the true origins of red hair was in the steppes of Asia among their Amazon women. That’s right, the warrior Amazon women. And it seemed likely that as the ice age ended they moved west probably settling in Ireland. Her history and dedication exploded. She was truly demanding and grew in the story. Sometimes as the supposed writer I wondered who was in charge.

Then Came Darling Luisa

Another Andromeda woman arrived and worked closely with Brigid. Brigid called her Kitten. She was darling, beautiful, irresistible to men and dangerous. As an agent of Andromeda she engaged men, often took them to bed and extracted the information and involvement she wanted as a part of her mission. In her story I knew I was in dangerous ground because she could have been viewed as despoiled rather than dedicated. But she was also insistent and in the age of empowering women I knew she had to be viewed more in terms of her dedication and courage.

Who Is In Charge?

It seemed as the author I was only nominally in charge. The characters were insistent and the story in the end seemed to presage the era we now find ourselves in. Strong and dedicated women were leading us into a time of transformation and they and us in our time don’t know where the transformation will lead us. Can we ever be detached from the larger picture of human life? Through fiction we can open our eyes to the rich and powerful developments which may go well beyond a simple view of life on a lovely planet.

Gaia’s Majesty-Challenge

The Origins and Sources of the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy – Pt. 5

Being Moved Beyond Simple Exposition – From Within

Many of us who write fiction probably do not anticipate where the effort will lead us or what begins to stir within ourselves. When I began the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy I had a story line and then used Dara Marks’ Transformational Arc to organize it and structure it. One perception is that it may then be a matter of filling in the blanks. No such thing.

The story took on enhancements and a life of its own in ways not anticipated. And then there was the matter of insistent characters who showed up for inclusion. In the end I had to concede that the story and the writing process was stirring things inside of me.

Essential Elements

At the beginning, the intention was to write a story about the salvation of our future. Without a doubt we live again in a very dangerous time. In human interactions we have the capacity to use nuclear weapons to bring untold destruction. At the same time we are seeing clear evidence of climate change wrought by our presence. Deniers can deny all they want but we have the capacity to damage so much of this planet in ways never before seen.

Other Discoveries

Even though we have been around our habitat for millions of years, we know so little about it in many ways. We have learned that life is insistent. We have learned about change and now know how adaptable life forms are. We discovered life so deep in the ocean around warm vents where we assumed no life forms could exist. We now know that asteroids contain water and amino acids which strongly suggests life seeds itself well beyond this planet. How naive we have been!

Being Discoverers

We know we like to explore and discover more and more about our world. And now we are looking to go to Mars. It has been virtually striped of its atmosphere because it has no magnetic field but we seem interested in terraforming. It is unlikely but we may discover something we had not thought about.

What will happen if we break out? Are we ready? Are we mature enough as a species to bear the burden which discovery reveals? And who might we meet out there. In Star Trek they insisted that they not interfere in civilizations in other worlds they discovered. Part of that seems to come out of the perception that we may not be that wise. There are stories of invasion and attacks by extraterrestrial beings and we hope they do not come here. That, in some ways, is a projection of our understanding about our frequent lack of maturity.

What Fiction Brings

As I wrote the story, its characters developed. And now as I look at the trilogy I find that a book 4 seems to be demanding my attention. But it remains in the shadows and I will see if it will manifest itself. But one thing became apparent, that the story was leading me toward the theme of transformation. In human history we have seen sudden delineations and development as with language and culture. Is there a transformation in our future?

If we survive this dangerous period, how might we advance? Suddenly we see stunning revelations about widespread molestation and mistreatment of women. The cascade of revelations is such that we cannot turn back from it now and women will no longer have to suffer under this kind of rule. And in writing these books I found that the empowerment of women was essential. I really have to wonder if the empowerment of women is going to lead us to a significant transformation. We will see won’t we?

Men! Its Time!

Time to Explore

It is clear this is when women are to become empowered. Do we stand on the sidelines and wish them well or oppose what must come?

There is a third alternative. Seize the moment to look at ourselves so that we may have perspective on who we are in history and who we are to become. I’m finding our silence stunning. Certainly some of us are embedded in one of the other two alternatives but I hear precious little about who we are to become. In fact, I hear little discussion of who and what we are.

Beyond Alternatives

Perhaps the most compelling possibility right now is not whether we support or oppose the women’s movement. I would suggest it is time for us to decide about our identity and the future we might choose.

As I’ve explored thoughts about what is happening I find I am sifting issues about politics and power. In our current climate I find almost everything these days is reduced to politics and I find that narrow. At the same time I see a lot which seems related to power. Not just power among men in our government but whether our response to the women’s movement is about our view of our power—over women.

Why Power?

It is so curious that we are having this crisis. Yes, it is a crisis because, like or not, the outcome of the empowerment of women is a world changing process. If what men are fighting is about power then we have an issue which badly needs attention. Why the hell do we need to have power over women?

Are we so insecure that we think we must have control over women. If we have fallen in love with her, are we afraid she will leave us? Does that mean we hold ourselves in such low regard? Certainly relationships and marriages break up. Do we fear the process of life so much that we have to maintain a grip over women and for what reasons? Or do we have such a low understanding of what is being demanded of us that we fear any change?

More Questions

This whole issue about men in the era of women’s empowerment is driving me down a path with many more questions than answers. At base It is my feeling that men badly need to examine themselves. One way to put it is that it is almost as if men need to be empowered. And that is not about having power over women but about the possibility of our own insecurity and fear of inadequacy.

Answers

Surely there are answers but I caution us against an easy dismissal. We really need to look at ourselves. The pictures of the freshman class in the House of Representatives was stunning. On the one hand was the picture of white Republican men in dark suits. On the other was a picture of Democrats with a large contingent of women in multiple colors. Was it past and future?

When I started writing this post I thought i had a focus. But when I began to explore I found I had no focus because I think men need to explore what has not been explored. And I feel we cannot accept easy answers and dismissals.

Vision-Searching Truth and the Future

Choices

Whether we want it or not we are always confronted with choices. There may be bold steps but there is always the choice to do nothing. The last alternative is not one I relish.

When it comes to choices it often is a matter of what is presented to us and they may not be ones we want. My preference is to insure that we have options we would like to have. And my personality type inevitably leads me to searching for possibilities. The down side is that we can construct things we don’t need to be choosing and they may not be a good ideas. But in the end I always want to search what might be.

The Obvious and the Not Obvious

Clarity of the present scene of our lives may be a good place to begin to construct vision. The real palate set before us may offer everything we may want but to simply choose from that array leaves us open to the unexpected and what may materialize.

Another alternative for us is to look back and see if there are harbingers or my favorite possibilities which may introduce us to what may be or will be coming. Granted that may lead us to a futile search if we are too insistent or perhaps unwilling to face an insistent reality.

Dreams or Possibilities

Dreams may be one place we search for the future but in dreams we may construct something which is not attainable or even desirable or may actualize our dreams. Whatever we choose there are a number of ways to use them. As I’ve said, when I began to construct the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy I thought it was just one book and learned otherwise. I reached back into mythology and melded it with the movement to empower women. The first was an intriguing story told across the world and the other is an intriguing reality occurring across the world.

Not Accepting the Obvious

When we embark on this kind of investigation we cannot always know what we will conclude or find. But, in many ways that is what life is fundamentally like. But as I moved forward in the writing I found I was not completely in charge. Characters were insistent, I discovered some of what I thought were my themes were something other than what I thought they were.

In the End

But in the end, if it ever is ending, I had to conclude that I was scanning possibilities and some of them seemed to suggest what might truly be our future. The reader of course makes their own contribution and the partnership of reader and writer has its own set of possibilities. In the end this is what life is about. It involves struggle and we can’t assume we know where we will be led. What a gift!

Feminism and the Roles of Characters

Changes For Female Characters

How do you feel about recent changes for women?

It has gotten more challenging to write female characters, especially now that the traditional role of women is being questioned. “The woman’s place is in the home” has receded into history and the permissible roles are changing. Yes, I chose the word “permissible” deliberately. There are still pressures regarding what a woman should and should not do and how she should act. This is an evolutionary process. And it affects how we develop fictional characters.

Greater Challenge

And so the author has to decide upon what a female character should be like or at least should attend to how they may be affected by contemporary views. Of course, if we are writing fiction a woman can do anything the author wants her to do. And then we will see how the reading public reacts. This raises the possibility for the author of challenging views and change. Of course, there is the matter of wanting people to buy your books.

Off Into a Changing world

And so I set off into the world of fiction and fantasy. The setting was contemporary which conditioned certain choices. And that can be challenging. There is a context for the present but if we are writing into the future there are many more contexts that become available. In the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy these were women chosen for roles to lead us into the future and related to whether that future will be fulfilling or disastrous.

In history and in the present women certainly have had a variety of roles whether we approved of them or not. In this instance I began with a role where the Andromeda women were the consorts of rich, powerful and greedy men. I wanted them to be people readers could relate to and not simply courageous women who sought wealth and ease. They had to have values even if they were hidden. And implicit is that just because they are consorts they are in no way despoiled. They are their own person and have their mission. In fact they deserve recognition and praise.

What Will Women Think!

It would have been complicated to weave the history of the warrior women of ancient near Asia into the story for context purposes. It was inspiring to come to understand this part of history and the Andromeda women had to stand on their own. Of course they were not uniform and had their personal stories. I came to appreciate them more and more as I got deeper into the books. I’m pleased to say that so far I’m finding that women appreciate them. I think we all fundamentally understand that challenge in life is highly variable as is adaptability depending on need.

Coming to Comfort

The theme of an end to subjugation of women and their empowerment is woven deep into the story. I admired these “gutsy” women. They are smart and tenacious. Certainly they are not passive and retiring. They are who they are and they have joined a cause and that relates to what is happening for women and all of us now. Women have a growing opportunity to fulfill their talent and potential. And that in turn leads to value for all of us. It is truly a pleasure to see recent revelations about what women have suffered under predatory men and that those men are now suffering consequences. It is not all over, but increasingly we will now see women stepping foreword and they will receive broad support. It is more than about time for #MeToo.`
