Believing in Ghosts

Do you have unexplained perceptions?
What We Believe

“Modern people don’t believe in ghosts”, seems a reasonable statement except for the fact that many do. Most who do believe probably won’t admit it. We all feel things and occasionally perceive things we can’t explain. We may or may not dismiss the experience.

Myths and Reality

In writing the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy I had to address support of a fantasy and deal with what I did and did not believe. We do not have definitive evidence of the existence of ghosts or spirits although it is widely debated and many believe in various forms.

In most circumstances I would probably say I don’t believe in ghosts or spirits except for the fact that I do. It’s just that I can’t provide a good explanation. But let me tell you how my belief was enhanced.

Innocence

After graduate school my wife and I brought our new baby girl to the Baltimore area. We wanted to live in the country and found a country home to rent. It was a lovely one hundred and twenty year old three story stone house situated in the middle of a three hundred acre farm. We fell in love with it at once.

All was quiet for awhile. But soon in the evening we found our dogs often would suddenly sit up and look at the doorway into the hall. Both of us often felt something, a presence in the hallway. There was an attic on the fourth floor. The door had a hasp with an angled piece of wood firmly placed in it to hold it shut. The problem was the piece of wood was often on the floor and the door often stood open even after we had recently secured it. Our daughter was still and infant and we tended to have no visitors.

Seeking Evidence

At last we sat one evening and asked general (not leading) questions to each other. We concluded we were feeling someone was walking from the attic down the stairs to a small study near the living room. There was no perception he went anywhere else. Yes, it was clearly a he.

Finally I asked the owner about the history of the house. There were a lot of details but the most interesting was the history of renters who either loved the house or who fled for some unexplained reason. We felt the presence was somewhere between benign and positive since we loved the house. We also assumed if you did not love his house you would feel uncomfortable. We learned to simply accept the presence.
Our Conclusion
Then it came time to leave to go to a home we had purchased. As we were preparing to move, in the evenings the dogs went crazy barking at the hallway. The long and short of it was that we felt our unseen friend was drawing closer. There were a lot more details, but that’s the outline. It felt like someone was there and he didn’t want us to leave.

Our new home was even older and we felt no presence in the house. Outside was an entirely different matter. I’ll talk about that in a future post.

Do I believe in ghosts? I have to confess I do, although I don’t know what they really represent and why we can or cannot perceive them. And when it came to writing fiction, I could not dismiss the importance of involving a spirit world. I can’t dismiss the spirits either.

Do you have a clearcut belief one way or the other?

Speculative Fiction

Finding a Category

dreamstime_m_31016144

What is your favorite category of fiction?

I’m frustrated. My Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy has come to life. The characters have clarified and paraded before me richly displaying themselves. And I can perceive the forces of the universe which drive them and give life to the future of humankind.

But I have to place this work in what is called a real context. That means, in part, I have to say what type of fiction it is. I can tell you what it is not and run into a road block when I must say what it is. A concise description has been alluding me. I want to call it speculative fiction but Amazon has no such category.

Encompassing

It seems that speculative fiction is a broad category with elements, settings and characters which are derived from imagination and speculation. I created the blog cuspofreality.com because I don’t believe in a hard edged reality. Everything is far more nuanced. Evidently speculative fiction encompasses science fiction, horror, fantasy, science fantasy, magic realism and something called alternative history. I have to say that I believe those terms do not well describe Gaia’s Majesty.

My Personality

I know exactly what’s going on and why I’m having trouble with terminology. And it has to do with my personality. Other blog posts on cuspofreality, com will relate to the full array of personality types but I know mine and I know what’s happening. I’m what’s called an introverted intuitive thinking type. That means my perspective comes from deep inside of me (introversion) and my intuition means I’m intrigued by possibilities and forever ask “what if”. Then comes my auxiliary function which is thinking. That means after generating the possibility I turn to refining and organizing.

Possibilities and Our Future

In terms of fiction there are specific consequences. I don’t write literature. I find the turn of the phrase is something I stumble over as if the area in which I’m working is strewn with boulders in my way. I want the image and the possibility.

Out there is a world of changing possibilities and they invite social commentary. Certainly there is a history and what composes the history. For me, under the guidance of Carl Jung, history has deep mythological roots. And then there are the images. One image which has always intrigued me is the image of that darling mermaid. She is not an isolated image, but is found in almost every society which has significant water. Who is she and why does she exist?

Threat and Conflict
I believe she represents the mystery and threat of women. Yes, both of those things. Is love concrete? I think not. Is a man being enraptured by a woman something which can be taken lightly? I think not. The mermaids in myth are beguiling, but also may bring a man to his death. We can see the conflict and the ambivalence. Those things are not fictional. They exist in our world as it is and are often not discussed or recognized.

And then there is the fact of human conflict and what much of the rule of men has brought us. Again there is a reality, but behind it there is the myth and the varying truths. How could I not explore all this. There are deeply hidden elements in humankind which include deeply beguiling forces and fearful destructive forces. But look at the maelstrom in the universe and see the creativity that comes out of the clash of galaxies and forces. Out of it comes new planets, suns, stardust, of which we are made, and all manner of creative life. How can we not explore these things.

An Emerging Future

And then there is the matter of blending history with emerging themes. The power of women is not seen in the image off a women with a sword. It is seen in so many other elements bewitching and beautiful but powerful in their own right as well. And now, in our world we have the movement to empower women. I must wonder at the possibility (that word again) and where it may lead us and what are the deeper meanings.

Realities Budding Before Us

These books are not just adventures. They ask us to look at the possibilities before us and what the stirrings in the world may indicate about our potential and our future.

And so I created a world of speculative fiction which is not full of multi headed creatures or strange science. It is not meant to horrify nor be pure fantasy because there is a reality there. I see human cultures as waves of change and we are in a fundamental one right now I’m convinced. And so—what if—our earth goddess set aside a movement of women to guard our future and they live safely in the sea and are seen from time to time as mermaids. And what if they are now coming to power and the empowerment of women is indicative. And as they come to power they come into true partnership with men. Surely there is a struggle ahead but quite possibly a glorious future.

And suddenly emerges Saturday January 21, 2017 and the Women’s March!

What struggles and futures do you see?

Fiction Writing Process III

dreamstime_m_50969876

Personal Approaches

How do you approach writing? Do you have a system?

Of course in writing there are nuts and bolts which may be idiosyncratic. Although there are some general best writing practices, I suspect we each may have different approaches we prefer.

After a lot of thrashing around, I’ve pretty much settled on writing first thing in the morning. What is really odd is that I am definitely not a morning person. But what has ended up working is to get things going first and then attending to all the other organizational and evaluation things later in the day. After all, fiction writing is not totally about writing. There are also matters of development of the product and promotion along with the necessities of publication.

Building and Sustaining Energy

So I get up in the morning and sit down at my computer. I don’t know how many others do this, but I put on my earphones with my preferred music. I found Pandora helpful and constructed a number of stations, but prefer one with a mix of women jazz singers, romantic piano pieces and technodance. I seem to need variability.

I know it seems odd to be listening to women singing jazz songs, soft piano interwoven with technodance. But I found if I turn off the music my energy starts to fade. Somewhere in the back of my mind it is energizing me and is piped through my brain in such a way that it does not interfere with the creative process. I call it my adolescent brain. I remember listening to music as a kid and it did not interfere with my homework. I still work that way. Strange brains we have.

Unbidden Inspiration

I’ve also tried not to be rigid. There are some nights when I awaken late and find myself writing in my head. Many of us have the experience of having something “brilliant” happen in the middle of the night and then we can’t remember it come morning. Or, in the light of day, it doesn’t seem so brilliant. Generally, while I do not get up and write it down, I find it is valuable and I retain it. It becomes part of the weaving process.

An Organizational Process

In the end though I feel strongly I need an organizational process. I like the creative part better and am less enthusiastic about the rewrites and correction process. Some days I feel overwhelmed and have to manage those days carefully. I do thank my auxiliary personality function of thinking for the inherent organizational abilities. If I’m overwhelmed I just pull back and let the organizational part take center stage.

Never Alone

And then there are the characters who come to live at my house. It is truly a fascinating process. Mostly I like them but not all of them. So I have to tolerate even the ones I don’t like because they serve a plot purpose. I don’t know of anywhere it is written that the writer must love or even like his antagonists or even the flaws of some central character.

It is fascinating to see characters grow and develop or change entirely. One time I killed a character and then found I had to bring her back from the dead. Sometimes they just mature and that maturity in turn may indicate the need for another character to partner with the first one.

Overall I think each of us probably are mostly in love with the creative process first and foremost. It is a tribute to what our brain holds. And then, like so many things in life, there are inevitable requirements which come with the process.

Are you clear about what you like and don’t like in the writing process?

Meshing Fantasy with Unfolding Crises

dreamstime_m_42140422

Do you find current world events disturbing or hopeful?

The World Trembles

Again I have to note the title of this blog is Cusp of Reality.

The news recently is chilling. It was not so long ago that the world seemed so much more stable and suddenly it seems almost surreal. Did I somehow move to an alternative planet which bears a strong resemblance to this one, but with an entirely different character? It feels that way and simultaneously I find myself reviewing history as I’m reading the book Postcapitalism by Paul Mason (again).

Inseparable Reality and Fiction

Suddenly we are falling deeper into crisis and it seems they are just beginning. While we cannot know where it will lead the possibilities are far more daunting than hopeful. And then I look at my Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy and see an unfolding of a worldwide crisis. It is very difficult for me to separate the fiction from what may be the reality of what is unfolding in our world whether it is social conflict or dangerous climate change.

Oceans as Models

More and more I’m convinced of the significance of what is called wave theory in human affairs. Waves come in many forms. We can observe the succession of empires in the ancient world, the coming of feudalism moving to capitalism and now seemingly beyond. Each has a wave form and, like waves, there seems to be a culmination and an end. Another wave inevitably follows. Our mighty oceans are deeply significant as models. Likewise politically we see waves of astonishing proportions leading to cataclysmic wars and such things as dynamic economic developments. The march of human history is hardly peaceful, nor is it adequately described as a march.

Melding Truths

It is impossible for me not to respond to what is resonating around me. I have always looked off into the distance and weighed the significance of events and experiences. It would appear that my devotion to my fiction reflects a concern about world affairs. As I have said, I see great truth about humanity in mythology and in my writing I have meshed myth with the empowerment of women.

What Women May Bring

The rise of women is not core to the developing world crises but I see it as a wave of a contrary sort in that it represents something which I believe is of profound significance. It gets little attention but, as in the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy, the movement of women and the grace they bring to human affairs may well be a determining factor for the outcome of our development.

Tools to Face Our Future

Reality is truly something open to interpretation and vastly different outcomes. It is essential to our stability but, taken as definitive, it may leave us vulnerable and without the tools to manage inevitable crises. Suspending our belief has utility and the search for alternatives of all kinds can help us survive. In the same way fantasy should not be dismissed because it helps us explore and seek alternatives. And that includes coping skills and utility in speculation.

Will we face who we are and our vulnerability? Will we use our skills and our talents to guide us? In future posts I will be addressing themes related to the strengths and weaknesses of humankind as well as elements of vision. Dealing with what is to come requires us to blend reality with tools derived from fantasy and speculation. And my special interest in our world is seeing how the unfolding of the potential of women may serve us.

Possibility as Opportunity

What do you see in today’s picture? What might it represent?

dreamstime_m_14082268

What possibilities are you searching in your life?

Questioning the Fiction We Write

Throughout the writing process I find myself asking a question about what I write. I prefer to call it speculative fiction because of what the story means to me but, evidently, the term covers a lot of territory. I usually settle and call it fantasy but the term is unsatisfactory to me. I know clearly it is not science fiction and certainly not horror. But what the story holds out to me is that it represents something I want. I also want to offer something specific to the reader.

When I explore my thoughts about what I create I am also clear that I am not writing literature. The turn of phrase does not enthrall me and at the same time I don’t see it as entertainment pure and simple. In the end I return to the core of my personality type. My primary function in my personality is intuition and the word I come up with again and again is “possibility”. For me it is a search and all of my life has involved search. Whether it was me in primary school looking out the window exploring a thought the teacher gave me or seeking a job with relentless potential later in life.

What Opens Before Us

Also with possibility comes the word “opportunity”. Isn’t that what a possibility is? It need not be a pure abstraction but can lead to a discovery and perhaps something to be done or even a mission.

Is There Some Form of Guidance?

At the same time I find myself entering the realm of wondering if there may be some form of guidance or the imposition of direction and purpose. And once that question is raised we have almost infinite possibilities and theoretical positions. Given the state of the world, I thought it was more interesting to pose purpose related to guidance from an earth goddess. We, after all, have to assume some responsibility for ourselves and our home. Perhaps we will be tested and since all animals struggle there is no reason why we should be an exception. It seems unlikely we will be given anything completely although some guidance might be possible. We learn through struggle. We grow through struggle. We justify our future through struggle.

And too often we confine our view to this planet when there is a rather large universe out there of which we are a product in the form of stardust. Why confine our search for possibilities. It might be that there is some form of even larger purpose growing out of the dynamism that is the universe and its fundamental forces. It would be beyond anything that we have yet conceived of.

How Central is the Instruction of Struggle

And then, of course, there is the matter that struggle is not merely struggle but almost surely offers productive possibilities and leads us to shaping challenge and purpose. We need to search the horizon for opportunity. And then when we focus on the specific work itself we might find all forms of opportunity. And in fiction there are characters to engage our explorations. We can ally ourselves with a character like ourselves or seize the opportunity too take in and work with someone completely unlike us. In fact we may find that some part of our unconscious is being raised or brought to our attention. It all composes opportunity.

Personal Discovery

In writing I found myself challenged by these thoughts and they lead to personal discovery. I did not set out to find them our build them. As an intuitive type I found they built themselves. In all you can see the possibilities with which I wrestle and they are components of the coming Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy.

And then I must comment on the picture I chose for this post. It is what we psychologists call a projective devise. I see it as our earth goddess in charge of our world. But how do we interpret it. How do you see it? Does this image intimidate us or challenge us to respond. Does the power frighten us or does it suggest struggle and possibilities as I outlined above. I tend toward seeing opportunity and dynamism with us under the command of the goddess/world we may be stewards of or ruin. Do we get guidance?

Nicolai Redux

dreamstimefree_216400

I’ve posted previously about my friend from graduate school, Nicolai Khoklov.

To review – One day at Duke University I was introduced to a new graduate student by the name of Nicolai. His heavy Russian accent was intriguing. Later it came out. He had been the head of the KGB for Eastern Europe and finally, after much soul searching, he defected.
In some ways the story is dramatic. Our intelligence service was to get his family and take them out of the country when he went on Radio Free Europe to announce his defection. They didn’t do it and he lost them forever. Later, when he was in Germany, Russian intelligence tried to poison him with a radioactive substance. He survived. That’s the drama.

The Truth Is Spoken

Then there is the other part. One evening Nicolai talked at length about his experiences. The key words he uttered in conclusion were – “You think it is like James Bond. It is, in fact, like Get Smart.” (For the younger generation, Get Smart was a television show which satirized intelligence services.)

Nicolai’s words continue to resonate with me. Especially in this election year. We are looking at the people who are running to be the president of the United States. Without being grandiose, the position is rather important. But what we are showing the world is embarrassing.

How Are We To Assess This Specter

At the same time Nicolai’s statement relates. In this campaign season, we may dismiss the show as a form of comic opera or are we seeing life as it is? Many of us are shocked at the Trump phenomenon, but, is the truth that this was there all along and we have not seen or experienced it this openly?

Get Smart was meant to be funny but what we are seeing is anything but funny. Or is it that we should be honest with ourselves and that we are seeing fundamental truths about humanity? It is sobering to realize that these kind of beings were there all along and we need to attend to the fact of their existence. Maybe the recognition is uplifting and useful.

Remember, Nicolai’s job was to safeguard the underbelly of the Soviet Union in Europe. He was to gather intelligence, kill people if necessary and build an underlying defense force for his country. In the end he felt it was all a lie and his job violated his sense of humanity. And so he followed the guidance of his conscience. Wouldn’t it be nice if we had more politicians with his integrity.

Another Form of a Reality Show

The lesson for us is that this is not comic opera. It is reality and it is often dysfunctional and displays the faults and frailties of humanity in its worst forms. We may laugh, but often should cry at what is revealed. Will we see a form of the Gunfight at the OK Coral in Cleveland at the Republican Convention? If we do, or if it is just an outrageous congestion of the soul almost doesn’t matter. We will see ourselves and what is lurking under the surface. That, in itself, is valuable.

Get Smart was for fun but as is often the case with comedy, it displays lessons to which we need to attend. Again we come back to our view of reality. We have to decide how we interpret the events of this season and what we do with it is another matter.

What have you concluded?

Meaning in the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy

dreamstime_m_47158625

Are you in search of meaning?

Finding Out Why We Write

Probably I’m not the only one who begins writing not knowing exactly why I am writing. We find the creative process appealing but determine that there is inspiration and discovery.

The question of genre keeps coming up. When I have to choose a genre at publication speculative fiction often doesn’t seem to be an option. But, I prefer that term over fantasy. The word speculative describes the process for me. I find as I go along that I am exploring things and the words “what if” hang in the air.

Alternative Life Forms

The world of humankind is heavy with alternatives as regards our understanding of life forms. We deal in gods, less often goddesses, and weave in beliefs in other life forms in our religions. It is so interesting that we have little if any concrete evidence for the existence of such things as angels and evil spirits but we believe anyway.

Some of our insistence seems to relate to our vivid imaginations. Is that shadow over there a being?

Intriguing Explorations

What I have found is that the exploration of what might be is, in itself, intriguing. And it has no doubt been important in human history. Our exploration of what might be has led us to amazing inventions in such things as information technology. Sitting here in this room, it is quiet (aside from the fact that the furnace just turned on). But I know the room is alive. I can pick up my smart phone and the world comes pouring in. It is in the air! And I can’t see it. Why would anyone seek to investigate the possibility of such a means of communication? What nonsense to even think it possible.

Psychologists like to consider themselves scientists and some of them are. Those of us in the clinical arena have other attributes. In psychotherapy we have to probe the intangibles of the human mind and all the bits and pieces which make up our emotional and cognitive existence.

Leaving the Question Open

From time to time I find myself considering the possibility that there may be other life forms amongst us even if we can’t see, touch or communicate with them. In general, if such beings exist, we have no need to relate to them. Our senses are attuned for specific purposes. But what if one day we found that new levels of being opened to us? Might it happen if there was a new purpose where we had achieved a new level of development? In the history of earth it was not so long ago that we didn’t have language or culture. We found our voice and our systems. We might still find a deeper and more diverse form of life coexisting with us. And these types of thoughts are why I forage in the land of speculative fiction.

Where have you chosen to forage?

Peace Through Empowerment of Women

dreamstime_m_8801808

Why have we failed to notice the empowerment movement?

Achieving Partnership

The empowerment of women worldwide is an underreported process of unprecedented importance. To the degree that its import is recognized, we see highly beneficial effects on relationships, families, communities and countries. While our attention is drawn to such things as what may be the beginning of a hundred years war in the Middle East and the absurdity and shame of our national politics, we may be missing the dawn of the maturity of humankind as we achieve true partnership between men and women.

Myth as Truth

For me this stunning process collided with my regard for the work of Carl Jung. Although he may be simply described as a psychiatrist, he went ever so far beyond the human mind to study the meaning of myth. What he brought back to us was the recognition that myth comprises not just interesting stories but the truth of humanity.

Weaving the Movement and Myth

In the end I found I could not overlook the opportunity to weave together the story of empowered women in a mythological context. And so was born my work of speculative fiction called the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy. The first book, Gaia’s Majesty: Discovery – An Unbearable Choice has just been published and is available on Amazon as a paperback or in the Kindle edition.

Alternatives to Reality

dreamstimefree_284535

Do you believe in alternative realities?

Fertile Imaginations

Of course we are clever and imaginative creatures. We have the capacity to deal with things other than reality. We have imaginations and can explore alternatives. Such an ability is useful not just in what we call creative endeavors. It serves us in hard sciences as well because we think of things not yet established as fact or even functional.

Literature of various kinds are telling. For example we tell stories about ghosts and paranormal experiences. There are various ways to explain these phenomena and, in some ways, we need not define them. Hard science has not been able to clearly demonstrate the existence of ghosts but we believe in them anyway. We can theorize what they might be. One hard headed explanation would view them as projections of our thoughts, feelings and dreams. In that explanation they are merely our own creations and are not real.

Having an Open Mind

An alternative is to look at ghosts as a real possibility. They may be seen as an alternative form of existence of someone who has died or a different form of being which comes from the past with a mission. It also may be that our senses have specific purposes and they don’t include viewing some other forms of life. The possibilities are almost endless and enrich our lives. And there is no reason to be utterly dismissive. They may be alternative forms of reality and they certainly make interesting storytelling. Paranormal processes in general serve similar functions and are not easily dismissed.

Socially Based Aberrations

There are all sorts of realities which take shape moment to moment. Certainly we seek our own platform to help us maintain a stable position among our fellows. Some of the alternatives may be social. I was fascinated to see pictures of an incident in Cleveland a few years ago. A black couple was fleeing the police. Before it was over there were 73! police cars chasing them. Obviously there had been a distortion of what we ordinarily call reality. There was no need for that many police cars and in the end this unarmed couple was shot to death.

And there are larger social phenomena such as what occurred in Germany during World War II. Much of the population seemed able to ignore the existence of over 20,000 prison camps where millions were being murdered. That is just one example of what we may do in the social arena.

Creative Departures

The examples are highly variable and endless. And in the interest of order and stability we insist that we maintain a relationship with reality. In art of various forms we have the capacity to depart and view the alternatives in a safe environment.
