Turning the Tide For Men

Now that we are having a movement to empower women it is also time to examine our view of the position of men. Let’s continue to broaden our focus.

In that interest I happened to run across an important article in Bloomberg Businessweek by Claire Suddath. It is entitled “How To Make Better Men”. My immediate reaction was to appreciate the challenge. Certainly she gets attention with the title.

Her Opening Statement

We are focused at once with her opening statement. “The #MeToo movement is slowly eliciting change in cultural institutions that help define masculinity.” She builds from there to offering a fresh perspective.

This is a much needed perspective.

We are making a mistake by focusing exclusively on women and their empowerment. Yes, it is time, but we cannot forget that men need attention as well. And by that I mean it is time to examine the position men are in and where it comes from.

A Refreshingly Broad Perspective

Claire Suddath offers an important opportunity. Increasing autonomy and respect for women has permitted women to come forward. Simply looking at power is not enough. And she is correct that simply saying the issue is merely a manifestation of the male culture is not entirely useful. She points out that our whole society supports the control and suppression of women. And when we step back we see the extensive nature of the issue. It clearly goes beyond men and their presumption of power.

Facing Complexity

If we accept the need to work on the larger issues involved, we may make the mistake of stopping with power. Yes, there are entrenched matters that may be legal and relate to power but, in the end, we have to face very personal issues for men such as self concept, self esteem and our opening to common ground socially.

Broader Issues

We may be trapped into stopping with considerations of accepting women into the job market and the broader political sphere. It was a hard fight for women to get the right to vote and now, decades later, we are seeing ramifications as we face other complexities. In truth we are only at the beginning stage. We are looking at a complex reevaluation of our societies, systems and how we relate to each other.

And deep down there are fundamental issues that are rarely discussed. We have to talk about our identities, interactions, goals and self esteem. The list is actually quite long.

Just Ahead

It isn’t necessary to be truly comprehensive as we open the stage for examination of and by men. We have a marvelous beginning as we build empowerment for women. But a major initial problem is that we may fail to look beyond their empowerment. There have to be major changes for men. It is a grand opportunity for universal enhancement. And men will find there are things in their world which bind and control them.

Gaia’s Majesty-Challenge

Men! Who Are We?

I’ve written several posts exploring the empowerment of women and supporting the changes. It is now time to begin to explore men, who they really are, and what is driving them.

Time to Challenge Our View of Men and View of Ourselves

Some might say we already know all about men. As a psychologist I have to challenge that assumption. I don’t think we know a great deal because what drives and defines men is deep in their physiology, their personalities, peer relationships, their culture, the overall culture and on and on.

Empowerment Is Merely a Beginning

Women have opened the way for us and it is time. As I thought about this post I saw a deep challenge. I found I could not even begin to raise a comprehensive view or ask all the needed questions.  Extensive exploration is required, and research, as we rush into our future at a faster and faster pace.

A Few Issues

Let me raise a few issues which came  to mind.

Men – Male Culture

What is the shape, form and detailing of what we might call male culture?

Power – Often we see men as being dominated by the quest for power. I doubt it is so simple. Seeking power can be compensatory, fear induced, have specific goals about which the man may not be clear at all. Etc.

Sexuality – Certainly there is a drive but what is it related to? There is a great deal of complexity there.

Sports tyranny – I was never into competitive sports. Above all I have been dedicated to exploring the “what if”. The pressure to be dedicated to sports among boys was always intense. One day when I was nine two boys were fighting over whether one was out or safe. I got fed up, walked off the ball field for good and rode away on my bike into wonder.

Suppression of women – At the forefront right now is the issue of the suppression of women. It is often led by men but there are also some women who support it as well. Surely men are central but when we look at it, it goes beyond men into the larger culture of our societies.

Men – Self Image

How does a man define himself? What does that man expect of himself?

Too often the image of what it means to be a man is assumed to be global. It is not. There should be room for breadth and diversity but especially in adolescence there is little room.

Men Versus women

Certainly men seek love and sex and weave women into their desires to build a  future with them. But when we delve a little deeper we get into a stunning complexity. Men are expected to take the initiative which also leaves them open to rejection and problems of self esteem. Can he please her, engage her, respond sexually and on and on. Adolescence is a time of challenge and change. It can leave deep scars which impact women as well. And one thing I hear little of is men’s reaction to their women giving birth. Women are the ultimate creator of human life. Men make a brief contribution and do support her but the baby is her special wonder. How men truly handle it remains a secret.

The Meaning of Partnership

The research – Certainly there is research out there but what I am suggesting is greater nuance and exploration. I don’t think we know as much as we think we do. We see wonderful marriages and partnerships but we also see many underlying issues which get in the way of fulfillment and partnership. And what of our personal exploration. A very challenging topic.

There! I Opened the Encyclopedia

This post was difficult because I found so many pathways opening. This is nothing but a totally inadequate probing of a whole field of study. Some might say it has been extensively studied. I do not agree.

Let me hear from you and I will, over time, seek to continue the exploration.

And now to another great challenge of our time!

Women – Why Now?

Time to Face the Unknown

I have some questions. No! I have a lot of questions and am getting restless.

Return of the Equal Rights Amendment

I’m hearing about a new movement for the Equal Rights Amendment. Last time it went through Congress and then the states failed to support it. Men were prominent in the opposition. Surprise!

But there were also some women who were opposed. Phyllis Schlafly was particularly prominent. Her role was clear in a recent television documentary. To be blunt, I saw her as power hungry and relishing prominence with her opposition. Her arguments held as much validity as a piece of window screen holds water. Nowhere could I see any justification for the failure to pass something supporting the equality of women.

Then There Are Men

In another recent post I’ve challenged men to begin to truly look at themselves. We don’t seem to have any idea who we are or what our true role should be. Turning into an aging white man in a dark suit is not exactly a laudatory life goal. But often it seems where we stand has little to suggest about why our positions require support. For what? Our own glorification and to put us on a stage?

The Roots of Opposition

Much of the opposition seems to be about abortion but I find their fundamental contentions to be invalid because they are even opposed to women having control over their own fertility. The battle is beyond anything reasonable. Men aren’t being honest and I have to suspect they aren’t even being honest with themselves because they aren’t clear about the roots of their opposition.

The World of Men

Again, I have to walk away from a sole focus on power as being what is motivating men to oppose equality and true partnership with women. The first thing men have to do is look at their world and how they relate to each other. It often is not a pretty sight.

There is something almost primordial here. The resistance is not about conservatism which is having its own crisis at present. Certainly there are specific issues which require attention but the global one should not involve conflict between liberals and conservatives.

Something Fundamental

if I had brilliance to lay out here I would do it. But, as a psychologist I have to sense that there is something truly fundamental operating. Men have questions for themselves and that includes how we treat each other and rigid foci on how men must be. We need to aid each other in exploration and I would encourage women to both challenge us and whisper in our ear.

What we need is to build a partnership to explore the problem we are having with equality and full partnership. The outcome could be globally empowering.
