Eve and the Snake

It’s Not So Simple

Monday’s post this week was about whether Eve did us a favor when she supposedly got humankind kicked out of Paradise. Of course there was another creature involved—the snake. The story I was thinking of was from the Bible. From interpretations I had heard, I thought the snake was somewhere between evil incarnate and the Devil. I thought it told us that we had lost the wonder of Paradise because we fell for what the snake was offering. Well, turns out it is all more complicated than that. In my post I indicated I thought it was not really so bad to be kicked out of Paradise. But then I got an interesting query from my friend Nathaniel.

“And where do you suppose the snake came from?” was his question. Crafty man Nathaniel. So I went online to get clarification. I was surprised.

Alternatives Offered

Here’s one thing I found:

“Fertility and rebirth. Historically, serpents and snakes represent fertility or a creative life force. As snakes shed their skin through sloughing, they are symbols of rebirth, transformation, immortality, and healing. The ouroboros is a symbol of eternity and continual renewal of life.”

Richness of Interpretation

Nathaniel had offered a interesting interpretation about mermaids which evidently symbolize a melding of earth and the sea and in the melding they also represent orgasm. Such wonderful complexity and it demonstrates what is offered to us in mythology and even in the world of fiction.

What I found particularly interesting is that when we rove into the world of symbolism and mythology there are often not simple answers. Certainly in my writing on the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy I have found multiple meanings that I had to weave into the story.

And There’s More

Then Nathaniel, with his rich knowledge of the Bible and symbolism, clarified further. “Yes, there are many symbolic meanings for the snake. We tend to forget that in the Biblical story God created the snake.  There is always a tension between bliss (the garden) and reality (post garden).  God also lives in that dialectic and, as creatures made in God’s image, so do we humans.”

Things to contemplate.

A Vision For Appalachia

Where should we apply our resources?

In this political season there is vision coming from some quarters and none from other quarters. One of the saddest things I am seeing is the complete lack of vision in regard to the future of the people of Appalachia and the victims of the coal industry.

Beauty at Our Doorstep

Appalachia is one of the most beautiful areas I have ever visited and its people have been treated terribly. We now have politicians claiming they are going to save the coal industry and the reality is that it cannot be saved. The corporations have found ways to decrease the labor needed and the coal is running out even while it is clear that we have to turn to renewable energy sources.

The Meaning of Help

So what of the people of Appalachia? Are we to do nothing for them, for their future. They have a very high opiate addiction rate partly because of the injuries so many have sustained in the coal mines. Addiction is not a simple matter. One thing that must be done for addicts, as we attempt to help them with the addiction, is to move them toward hope and purpose. We are not doing that.

We hear that their future is dim, that other forms of energy must be used but we hear nothing of how they and their communities may have a new and brighter future.

Other Models

Recently I spoke with someone who also attended Duke University and he had made a visit to the Research Triangle (Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Durham area). He said everywhere he turned he saw thriving startup companies. It made me think of Appalachia.

The mountains and the valleys are lovely, graced with streams and glorious seasons. Each of these little areas can be homes to the right businesses. Of course, there is snow which has a beauty of its own and then there is spring and a brilliant fall. The summers, because of the mountains, are more muted.

New Possibilities Being Born

We have entered the technological future and are seeing the possibility of something called post capitalism. We no longer are inclined to build huge industrial complexes. Instead we have pocket industries of a wide variety of sorts. Where California is lacking in water, Appalachia has abundant water.

Taking the Challenge

Because of history, the eastern mountains have many problems and change will not come overnight. But with vision we have an area which has tremendous potential. The beauty of it can help build a future but it will have to be a very different kind. It will take considerable resources, including health resources, patience and offering something to younger generations among many other things. At present I hear nothing of vision for them and their area.

We have been mired down in obstruction and lack of vision. Maybe I can raise the hope that we can begin to focus on constructive action and many shades of vision. In that we just might be able to develop the potential of Appalachia and to give the people hope and purpose. I can dream can’t I?

What visions are found in your dreams?

Are We Seeing a Denouement?

dreamstime_m_55007172

In symbolic form the Gaia’s Majesty Trilogy poses a fundamental possibility. Can it be that the worldwide empowerment of women indicates that humankind has reached a denouement in our development?

A Succession Is Possible

And now comes the carnage in Paris where despicable animals, without morals, attacked. They value only their own power and death. In fact, they do not honor or represent Islam. The occurrence of such a movement often indicates tensions which occur in history between the bassest instincts and a coming succession which empowers and elevates a people. In this instance those people are humanity—collectively.

The ISIS, so-called, “caliphate” demonstrates the lowest form of our worst animal instincts. We are more than that and, in time, will dismiss these nihilists from the human stage.

Universal Forces

In the trilogy I clarify two universal forces. One is the Mysterium which is the marvelous, enrapturing quality of women when they bewitch us, bringing us into a passionate partnership and the creation of new life. It is creative and fulfilling. Another universal force is the Maelstrom which is the destructive force closer to men. It is truly destructive but has a creative side seen in the appearance of new planets and suns when galaxies collide along with the creation of stardust as suns explode which shapes new beginnings such as ourselves.

I see the arrival of ISIS, with all its horror, as a possible signal of a coming denouement. Surely humanity will not honor them and, in time, they will pass from the human stage. And if the Mysterium remains as the central force and women are empowered to bring true partnership between men and women then humanity may rise to a new level.

Fostering a Creation

Perhaps I am being overly romantic and hopeful but it appears in human history that great conflict often precedes and indicates denouement before the arrival of a new era. We can do more than hope. We can work for its creation as do the Tethyans in Gaia’s Majesty: Discovery.
